With an assignment for your students in mind, draw a few molecules, copy and paste them to a
Word document, adjust formatting, write some questions and/or discussion, etc.
You might also use this document as a template and create an assignment where the students will
learn to use ChemSketch and the 3DViewer as a laboratory or homework assignment.
Tell them which molecules to draw, how to copy them to the 3DViewer and do a structure
optimization, what bond distances/angles to measure, and ask them questions about what
they discover.
Remember, the educational process is more effective when students discover facts and draw
conclusions on their own (with some guidance from you). Tools such as ChemSketch/3DViewer
can open up many possibilities for inquirybased
learning where students are actively engaged in
the learning process. Development of effective assignments that utilize technology takes some
serious thought and effort on your part. Start by developing one or two activities that utilize
ChemSketch and see how things work with your students.
